Fairness at Risk: Where Bias Emerges in Machine Learning

open access: yesExpert Systems, Volume 43, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) now shape decisions in healthcare, finance and security, but they can reproduce historical prejudice and inequality. Bias in training data and in model implementation can amplify harm, especially for racial and gender minorities.

Electromagnetic Quasinormal Modes: A Foundational Framework for Describing Fano Resonances of Extinction Spectra

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 9, 13 May 2026.
An ab initio electromagnetic framework links quasinormal modes to Fano resonances in extinction spectra. Analytical expressions for the Fano asymmetry and intensity parameters are derived from overlap integrals, enabling rapid spectral reconstruction and physical interpretation.

Ultrasensitive Tunable Terahertz Sensor via Critical Coupling‐Enhanced Fano Resonance

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 9, 13 May 2026.
This work presents a hybrid terahertz sensor via the combination of graphene‐strip metasurface, cavity resonance, and gold film polaritons. The sensor achieves critical coupling with an ultrahigh‐Q resonance and tunable FOM with stable high sensitivity via gate voltage regulation, exhibiting excellent performance for on‐chip integrated biochemical ...

Author-coined terminology in Russian verse theory: the formalist legacy

open access: yesСлово.ру: балтийский акцент
Any system of terminology serves as a map of the field within which it is employed. The history of terminology, as an integral component of intellectual history, offers valuable insights for methodological reflection.

The State Academy of Artistic Sciences versus Petrograd formalism: Verse theory. II. On Zhirmunsky’s “Rhyme, its history and theory”

open access: yesСлово.ру: балтийский акцент
The article presents a historical and scientific analysis of the oral presentations and other works that criticized Boris Eikhenbaum’s “Melodics of Verse” and Viktor Zhirmunsky’s “Rhyme, Its History and Theory” from the perspective of Moscow formalism ...

Information retrieval or document retrieval? Terminological confusions and unrealistic goals in information science, exemplified in relation to generative artificial intelligence

open access: yesJournal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, Volume 77, Issue 5, Page 714-726, May 2026.
Abstract ChatGPT and related technologies have revived an old issue in information science (IS) concerning information retrieval (IR) versus document retrieval. Since 1950, the term IR has primarily been used as a misnomer for document retrieval. This problematic terminology reflects a desire to go beyond documents and provide, in response to user ...

Skaz a Michail Zoščenko | Skaz and Zoshchenko [PDF]

open access: yesSvět Literatury, 2019
The present study deals with the narrative strategy which B. Eikhenbaum explored during the first two decades of the 20th century, and which is closely connected with the spontaneous verbal praxis.

Monte Carlo modeling of the field size dependency for thin window plane‐parallel chambers in kilovoltage X‐ray reference dosimetry

open access: yesMedical Physics, Volume 53, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Background Clinical dosimetry for kV X‐ray radiotherapy beams requires calibrated ionization chambers. When the clinical field size differs from the field size used for chamber calibration, in‐air measurements result in a different magnitude of scatter from the detector stem or body housing affecting the sensitive volume.

Can Eulerian Eddy Diffusivity Be Inferred From Lagrangian Trajectories?

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Lagrangian particle trajectories are widely used to characterize tracer dispersion and mixing driven by mesoscale currents (“eddies”), leading to estimates of eddy diffusivity that can in turn be used in non‐eddy‐resolving and eddy‐permitting ocean models.
