This paper tries to illuminate the current terminology of the spore forms of rust fungi. It is shown that the widespread adoption in America and elsewhere of the ontogenic approach to terminology is fundamentally illogical and causes difficulty and confusion.

The native rust fungi of Hawaii
Canadian Journal of Botany, 1994F.L. Stevens (1925. Bernice P. Bishop Mus. Bull. No. 19) published the first comprehensive list of fungi in Hawaii, recognizing 7 species of endemic rusts and 10 species probably indigenous. Stevens considered this small number of rusts particularly noteworthy in comparison with the rust floras of other areas with which he was familiar.

The writer has been interested in the Uredinales ever since he came to Alaska 25 years ago. During the earlier years specimens were sent to Dr. J. C. Arthur at Purdue University for determination, and reports of these were included in his work on the group in North Aminerican Flora, Vol. 7, and his Manual of the Rusts of United States and' Canada.

Nature, 1927THE phenomenon of heterothallism (the separation of sex in different individuals) is known to occur in the Phycomycetes (Mucor), in the Ascomycetes (Ascobolus, Penicillium), in a large number of Hymeno-mycetes (mushrooms and toadstools), and in the Smut fungi. Therefore the question arises: Does heterothallism occur in tho Rust fungi?
