Measurement of the Rydberg Constant with Trapped Rydberg Atoms

2018 Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements (CPEM 2018), 2018
A measurement of the Rydberg constant using cold circular Rydberg atoms is proposed. Since these atoms have long lifetimes, negligible quantum electrodynamics and no nuclear-overlap corrections, the measurement can shed new light on the “proton radius puzzle”. The atoms are trapped in an optical lattice.

Cold Rydberg Atoms

2007
Abstract We employ ensembles of cold Rydberg-atom gases produced via photo-excitation of laser-cooled atom clouds in order to investigate collision-induced dynamics, excitation blockades, and Rydberg-atom trapping. After a general description of typical experimental methods used in this research, we review state-mixing and ionizing collision ...

The Kicked Rydberg Atom

2005
Recent developments in experimental technique allow study of the ionization and excitation of Rydberg atoms by pulsed unidirectional electric fields, termed half-cycle pulses (HCPs), with duration T p ≪ T n , where T n is the classical electron orbital period.

Stabilization of Rydberg atoms

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1993
We discuss stabilization against ionization of Rydberg states at high light intensities. Theoretical considerations are presented concerning the type of state and atom in which this effect is most easily observed. Finally we show the experimental results for stabilization of the 5g‐state in neon, where a two‐fold reduction of the ionization rate is ...

Rydberg Atoms and Radiation

1981
Most atomic physics experiments involve, in one way or another, the coupling of atoms with electromagnetic radiation. The order of magnitude of the atom-field interaction parameters thus sets the scale of the phenomena in the atomic physics world. These orders of magnitude can quite generally be obtained by simple back of the envelope calculations ...

Double Rydberg Atoms

1999
Since the first attempts to calculate the helium ground state in the early days of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization two-electron atoms have posed a series of unexpected challenges to theoretical physics. Despite the seemingly simple problem of three charged particles with known interactions it took more than half a century after quantum mechanics was ...
