Hunting for pigments in bacterial settlers of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Environmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 6, June 2024.Oceanic plastic debris is heavily exposed to light, leading to the development of bacterial colonies that produce photoprotective and photosynthetic pigments. Our research reveals that these plastic biofilms are previously unrecognized sources of bacteria‐produced carotenoids and new species of phototrophic bacteria.
