The Southwest Ryukyu Arc is a migrating microplate (forearc sliver)

Tectonophysics, 1989
Abstract We propose a new interpretation for the tectonism of the Southwest Ryukyu Arc, based on inland stress field analyses and the interpretation of seismic reflection profiles. The recent stress field in the Southwest Ryukyu Arc is under tension, the axial direction of which is parallel to the trench axis, but an E-W dextral slip shear zone is ...

Quaternary volcanic front at the junction of the South-west Japan Arc and the Ryukyu Arc

Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, 1998
Abstract The Hohi volcanic zone, a 70 by 40 km volcanic graben on Kyushu Island at the junction of the South-west Japan Arc and the Ryukyu Arc, has been formed since 6 Ma to the present. Quaternary volcanism, producing centers along a NE–SW trending line, the volcanic front, started at about 1.5 Ma.

Submarine active normal faults completely crossing the southwest Ryukyu Arc

Tectonophysics, 2009
Abstract Several identified ‘active faults’ located in the southwest Ryukyu area may be an origin of M5-class earthquakes taking place frequently every year, sometimes of M7-class earthquakes which cause a severe geohazard in this area. ‘The East Ishigaki Fault’, one of the ‘officially identified’ active faults, was studied precisely by multibeam ...

Detailed volcanic morphology of Daisan-Miyako Knoll in the southern Ryukyu Arc

Marine Geology, 2018
Abstract High-resolution bathymetric mapping using an autonomous underwater vehicle and a survey vessel was conducted at Daisan–Miyako Knoll in the southern Ryukyu Arc. This paper presents for the first time the detailed volcanic morphology of a submarine edifice that previously was poorly explored, and discusses its formation process and relation to

Oblique Diapirism of the Yakushima Granite in the Ryukyu Arc, Japan

1997
Field observations and structural analyses of the orientations of ductile flow fabrics and brittle fractures are used to infer diapiric rise of the Yakushima pluton into epizonal Paleogene sediments of an accretionary prism in Miocene times. Inside the pluton, preferred orientations of orthoclase megacrysts define a weak primary flow fabric.

Detailed morphology and bubble plumes of Daiichi-Amami Knoll in the central Ryukyu Arc

Marine Geology, 2016
Abstract High-resolution geophysical mapping operations were conducted from a survey vessel and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in the Daiichi-Amami Knoll, Ryukyu island arc. For the first time, both the detailed morphology and the extent of the bubble plume in this region are revealed.

Arc Division and Its Effect on the Accretionary Complex: The Shimanto Belt at the Junction between the Ryukyu and Southwest Japan Arcs

The Journal of Geology, 1992
The junction between the Ryukyu and southwest Japan arcs was formed by the opening of the Japan Sea. Before and during the opening, an accretionary complex grew across the site of the arc junction, but the growth process was complicated owing to differential movement of the island arc.
