Preparation of Silica Modified with 2-Mercaptoimidazole and its SorptionProperties of Chromium(III)

open access: yesE-Journal of Chemistry, 2009
Modified silica gel was prepared to remove the heavy metal of chromium(III) from water sample. Silica gel was used as supporting material and the 2-mercaptoimidazole was immobilized onto surface silica so that the silica would have selective properties ...

Synthesis and adsorption properties of chitosan-silica nanocomposite prepared by sol-gel method

open access: yesNanoscale Research Letters, 2015
A hybrid nanocomposite material has been obtained by in situ formation of an inorganic network in the presence of a preformed organic polymer. Chitosan biopolymer and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), which is the most common silica precursor, were used for the ...

Can Elastomers Combine Stiffness, Toughness and Fatigue Resistance?

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review studies how the molecular and macroscopic architecture of elastomers influence their mechanical properties including: stiffness, stretchability, toughness, fatigue resistance, and damping behavior. By linking the structure to performance, it proposes design principles for advanced elastomeric systems that combine mechanical properties ...

Recent Advances in Ferrite‐Based Materials for Biomedical Applications: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ferrite nanoplatforms are presented as tunable biomedical materials in which synthesis control, cation engineering, defect/morphology regulation, and surface functionalization govern structure–property–bioactivity relationships. These design strategies enable multifunctional applications including MRI contrast, magnetic hyperthermia, targeted drug ...

High‐Performance Bio‐Glue From the Berries of a Parasitic Plant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report a fully bio‐based adhesive derived primarily from a (poly)saccharide extract obtained from the berries of the hemi‐parasitic plant mistletoe (Viscum album), supplemented with tannic and malic acid without any further chemical functionalization.

Hydrophobic MFI‐Type Zeolites via Alkali‐Cation‐Induced Defect Healing: Implications for Adsorbent and Catalyst Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Sub‐stoichiometric amounts of Na+ or K+ enhance defect healing during Silicalite‐1 (MFI) and TS‐1 calcination by promoting Si–O–Si annealing and healing framework vacancies. The resulting defect‐free zeolites are more hydrophobic and show improved butanol/water separation and improved activity and selectivity in the epoxidation of 1‐hexene, offering a ...

Programmable Functional Silicification of DNA Origami Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces additional functionality into silica‐coated DNA origami nanostructures using non‐standard silica precursors. A fluorescent precursor enables enhanced intracellular tracking, while a disulfide‐containing reagent yields redox‐responsive, degradable silica coatings.
