S-100 protein in human articular cartilage

We studied the immunohistochemical distribution of the alpha and beta subunits of S-100 protein in human articular cartilage by the Avidin-Biotin Complex method using monoclonal antibodies against each subunit. Immunostaining for both subunits was detected in chondrocytes in superficial, intermediate, and deep zones of normal articular cartilage.

Turnover of the Brain Specific Protein, S-100

Rats were killed after intraventricular administration of [ 3 H]leucine, and the turnover rates of total soluble proteins and of the brain specific S-100 protein were determined. The half-life of S-100 was estimated to be 16 days.

Abstract The association of the S-100 protein was studied by the HPLC of gel filtration in the presence of 0.5 mM Zn2+. To avoid any association of the proteins, it was necessary for the dissoving buffer to contain urea of 6 M concentration. This conclusion was confirmed by fluorescence measurements of S-100a.a′.

Ultrastructural localization of S-100 protein in neurofibroma

The nature of the cells in neurofibromas was studied by electron microscopy and immunoelectron-microscopic examination of S-100 protein. Ultrastructurally, all five neurofibromas studied were found to be composed of Schwann cells, perineurial cells, and intermediate cells, which had features of both perineurial cells and fibroblasts.

S-100 antigenic determinants in human retina

Few or no S-100 determinants are detectable in normal human retina. However, the expression of this antigen was observed on the retinal Muller cells of eyes with sympathetic ophthalmia or uveitis. This finding, along with other experimental data, may be interpreted as indicating the retinal Muller cells may have an immunoactive role.

S-100 Proteins: Relationships with Membranes and the Cytoskeleton

Proteins of the S-100 family, S-100a0 (αα), (αs), and S-100b (ss) belong to the superfamily of Ca2+-binding proteins of the EF-hand type (for review see Donato, 1986). S-100 proteins are widely distributed in animal tissues, yet they are not ubiquitous. In the brain, ~ 85% of S-100 is soluble in the cytoplasm and 15% of it is associated with membranes.
