Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

Gametophytic incompatibility in pome and stone fruits: genes controlling S-locus.

open access: yes, 2012
Angiosperms are the most prevalent and evolutionarily advanced group of plants. A critical step for the success of flowering plants was the wide promotion of cross-fertilization as reproductive strategy. The Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility (GSI) system

Regulation of Expression of Oxacillin-Inducible Methionine Sulfoxide Reductases in Staphylococcus aureus

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology, 2015
Cell wall-active antibiotics cause induction of a locus that leads to elevated synthesis of two methionine sulfoxide reductases (MsrA1 and MsrB) in Staphylococcus aureus.

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Maintaining (locus of) control? Assessing the impact of locus of control on education decisions and wages [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper establishes that individuals with an internal locus of control, i.e., who believe that reinforcement in life comes from their own actions instead of being determined by luck or destiny, earn higher wages.

Prokaryotic metallothionein locus and cadmium tolerance in Synechococcus PCC 6301 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanism of Cd-tolerance in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus PCC 6301 and to establish whether the prokaryotic metallothionein (MT) locus, smt, is involved.

An Integrative Evolutionary–Genomic Analysis Reveals the Factors That Shape the Sexual Diversity and Molecular Specificity of Gametophytic Self-Incompatibility in Prunus Species

open access: yesDNA
Background: Gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) controlled by a multi-allelic S-locus, is inferred to have evolved before the spilt of the Rosidae and Asteridae.
