Inversion of an S-N curve in a superalloy

Scripta Metallurgica, 1982
In this study on elevated temperature fatigue behavior at 1 Hz of Nimonic 115, the test procedure adopted is one in which the maximum stress is held constant and the cyclic stress range is varied by lowering the minimum stress. This mode of testing can represent low cycle fatigue conditions in gas turbines or jet engines.

Shift of S-N Curves with Stress Ratio

Welding in the World, 2003
The fatigue strength of transverse butt-welded joints of SB410, SPV490 steels and SUS304-HP stainless steel was evaluated experimentally at R = −1, 0 and 0.5 and byσmax = σy tests. The yield strengths for the SB410, SPV490 and SUS304-HP were 284, 579 and 275 MPa.

On the estimation of characteristic S–N curves with confidence

Marine Structures, 2012
Abstract When fatigue test data for the number of cycles N to failure are limited, the estimation of the characteristic S – N curve, defined as the curve corresponding to the mean value of log N minus two standard deviations of log N , becomes uncertain.

Structural Hot-Spot S-N Curves

2006
At first, general principles of the fatigue assessment approach using S-N curves are outlined, including the formula describing the design fatigue life in relation to the structural hot-spot stress range and the modification in the high-cycle regime to consider damaging effects under variable amplitude loading.

Significance of the Discontinuity in S/N Fatigue Curves

Nature, 1964
Abstract : The significance of the discontinuity in the S/N fatigue curve has been assessed by comparative testing under constant load and constant strain conditions. Reinforcement of the surface grain of a mild steel and a stainless steel have produced a large improvement in fatigue strength, the fatigue limit coinciding with the discontinuity ...

A REVIEW OF THE DISCONTINUITY IN THE S/N CURVE

1969
Abstract : The review outlines the discontinuities reported for a wide variety of materials. It is suggested that there are four basically different types of discontinuities in S/N curves, related to various phenomena.

Fatigue Test Plan to Obtain S-N Curves

New and Emerging Computational Methods: Applications to Fracture, Damage, and Reliability, 2002
S-N curves of structural materials are obtained through fatigue tests. These tests are often performed using five different stress levels, with fifteen test specimens for each stress level. This kind of test plan provides estimates that are less precise compared to other experimental plans, for example, the ones called optimum plan or compromise plan ...

Assessment of Design S-N Curve for Umbilical Tubes

Volume 6: Materials Technology; C.C. Mei Symposium on Wave Mechanics and Hydrodynamics; Offshore Measurement and Data Interpretation, 2009
A reliable design methodology for fatigue design of umbilical tubes is required by the industry. A documented design S-N curve is part of such a fatigue analysis procedure. During the last years a number of new fatigue test data have been derived for umbilical tubes.

Probabilistic S-N curves for constant and variable amplitude

International Journal of Fatigue, 2017
Abstract Welded details in steel bridges are subjected to fatigue lives up to 200 · 10 6 cycles due to traffic loads. While the majority of these stress ranges are below the Constant Amplitude Fatigue Limit (CAFL), some few high stress cycles can trigger the start of fatigue damage and lead the remaining load spectra to become ...

Factors That Affect S-N Fatigue Curves

2012
Standard S-N curves can be modified to account for all those factors that, like surface finish, load type, size etc., may have an effect on fatigue. However, the factors that will be treated in this chapter are not stress related, but are metallurgical and physical factors.
