S-NPP advanced technology microwave sounder: Reflector emissivity model, mitigation, & verification

2013 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium - IGARSS, 2013
The Suomi NPP spacecraft pitchover maneuver revealed an ATMS scan angle-dependent bias when viewing deep space, which is a homogenous and unpolarized source that fills the entire ATMS Field of Regard. Reflector emissivity was investigated as a possible root cause. The emissivity is polarization dependent, which results in a scan-dependent bias with the

Using the Moon to evaluate the radiometric calibration performance of S-NPP VIIRS thermal emissive bands

SPIE Proceedings, 2014
The Suomi-NPP VIIRS thermal emissive bands (TEB) are radiometrically calibrated on-orbit with reference to a blackbody (BB) operated at a nominal temperature of approximately 292.5 K. The quality of the calibration can be evaluated at other temperature ranges using independent thermal sources.

Analysis of S-NPP VIIRS RSB bands detector saturation status and its change with time

Earth Observing Systems XXIII, 2018
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the S-NPP satellite has been in successful operation for more than six years. One of the key performance parameters of the instrument detectors is the saturation of their digital counts (DN). For VIIRS, when the scene spectral radiance level is high enough, before reaching the digital maximum ...

Evaluation of different calibration approaches for S-NPP CRIS full spectral resolution SDR processing

2015 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2015
The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) on Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (S-NPP) is a Fourier transform spectrometer and provides a total of 1305 and 2211 channels in normal spectral resolution (NSR) mode and full spectral resolution (FSR) mode, respectively, for sounding the atmosphere.

Liquid Water Path (LWP) Retrievals from Reprocessed S-NPP ATMS Through Remapping

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard the Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) is a cross-track scanning instrument with frequencies ranging from 23 to 183 GHz which allows for probing the atmospheric temperature and moisture.

Subpixel Urban Mapping Over the Conterminous U.S. (CONUS) Using S-NPP VIIRS

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
A random forest regression model was developed to estimate subpixel urban percentage using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data and high quality calibration information derived from the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2011. Accuracy assessment resulted in a mean absolute error of 3.57% and a root mean square error of 8.50%.

Cloud Detection and Classification for S-NPP FSR CRIS Data Using Supervised Machine Learning

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Cloud detection and classification are important and challenging in satellite infrared remote sensing. This study proposes an end-to-end cloud detection and classification method for the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) based on big data analysis and relevant machine learning schemes.
