Dental caries is a chronic infectious disease of multifactorial etiology that derives from the interplay among cariogenic bacteria on the dentition, the host diet, and other environmental exposures. Streptococcus mutans proliferates as a biofilm on the tooth surface, where it obtains nutrients and metabolizes fermentable dietary carbohydrates.

Uptake and retention of tin byS. mutans
Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, 1980The uptake of tin by S. mutans from stannous fluoride or stannous chloride solutions was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The uptake occurred rapidly, and the microorganism was shown to have a greater capacity and higher affinity to uptake of tin than of other metal ions tested.

Effect of Polyol Gums on Salivary S Mutans Levels
Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, 2011The predominant sugar substitutes used in chewing gum are polyols which are low-caloric substances. The polyols most frequently used in chewing gums are sorbitol and xylitol. Aim:The present study assessed the effectiveness of xylitol and sorbitol chewing-gums on levels of S mutans in saliva.

AStreptococcus mutans immunogen that reacts equally withS. mutans antibody of all serotypes
Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 1984We have studied a possible immunogen from S. mutans that has the capability of producing antibody to S. mutans which reacts equally well with all serotypes. This immunogen, a ribosomal preparation, is immunogenic in mice, is antigenic with rabbit anti-S. mutans, and is antigenic with the human antibody that also reacts with S. mutans.

Alkylamine Salts and Amides: In Vitro Inhibition of S mutans 6715
Journal of Dental Research, 1977Our studies with the salts and amides of alkylamines have shown that the undecylenate salts have significant in vitro activity against S mutans No. 6715, suggesting that these agents are worthy of additional evaluation. The attempt to increase activity by combining undecylenic acid with the alkylamines was not successful; however, better attachment to

A comparison of S. mutans clinical assessment methods.
Pediatric dentistry, 1991The purpose of this investigation was to compare the tongue blade/Rodac plate assessment method, the Cariescreen (APO Diagnostics Inc., Toronto, Ontario, Canada) method, and a modified Cariescreen method for S. mutans assessment. Ninety-one triple tests were done on 23 children 1 to 4 years of age, and the S. mutans counts were compared.

A new selective medium (MS-MUT) was developed for the isolation of Streptococcus mutans from clinical specimens. The average growth recovery of S. mutans on MS-MUT medium was 72.4% of that on MS medium. Growth of Streptococcus sobrinus was significantly inhibited on the medium with an average recovery of 0.034%. In 103 subjects, S.

[Expression of the PAC gene of S. mutans in S. lactis].
Zhonghua kou qiang yi xue za zhi = Zhonghua kouqiang yixue zazhi = Chinese journal of stomatology, 1998Expression of the pac gene in S. lactis were analyzed by dot immunoblotting with rabbit anti-PAc serum. The amount of PAc produced by S. lactis HL107 (pLF107) was measured. This result indicated that a small amount of rPAc was detected in the culture supernatant and cell homogenate of S. lactis HL107 (pLF107) but not in the control strain S.
