Site selection for biogenic reef restoration in offshore environments: The Natura 2000 area Borkum Reef Ground as a case study for native oyster restoration

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 30, Issue 11, Page 2163-2179, November 2020., 2020
Abstract 1.According to the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC), marine protected areas (MPA) should contribute to a good environmental status of the Europeans seas. Measures maintaining or restoring a favourable conservation status of protected species and habitats are mandatory according to the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC).

Benthic assemblages of rock pools in northern Portugal: seasonal and between-pool variability

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2012
We investigated the seasonal (winter vs summer and within season) and spatial (between-pool) variability of benthic assemblages of rock pools at mid-intertidal level along the shore of Viana do Castelo (North Portugal).

Greening of grey infrastructure should not be used as a Trojan horse to facilitate coastal development

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 57, Issue 9, Page 1762-1768, September 2020., 2020
Where societal and economic demand makes development inevitable, particular attention should be paid to avoiding, minimizing and rehabilitating environmental impacts. Integrated greening of grey infrastructure (IGGI) should be implemented as partial compensation for environmental damage.

Effectiveness of acoustic cameras as tools for assessing biogenic structures formed by Sabellaria in highly turbid environments

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 30, Issue 6, Page 1121-1136, June 2020., 2020
Abstract Accurately mapping the extent and status of biogenic reefs formed by polychaete worms of the genus Sabellaria is of conservation importance given their protected status across Europe. Traditionally, side‐scan sonar (SSS) combined with ground‐truthing in the form of seabed photography and videography has been widely accepted as the most ...

Purification and characterization of proteases from the polychaete annelid Sabellaria alveolata (L.) [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1983
Eleven proteases have been purified to electrophoretic homogeneity from crude digestive fluid of polychaete annelids, Sabellaria alveolata. Purification steps were Sephadex G‐100 gel filtration, benzamidine‐cellulose and SBTI‐Sepharose (SBTI = soybean trypsin inhibitor) affinity chromatography, CM‐Sepharose and DEAE‐Sepharose ion‐exchange ...

The epibiotic community associated to the European flat oyster: a function of the state of development of the reef

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2025.
When healthy, Ostrea edulis populations are capable of creating remarkable biogenic reefs, providing a unique habitat for marine biodiversity. At present, the biotic assemblages associated with flat oysters remain poorly defined. This study aims to analyze biodiversity associated with the reef's development stage by focusing on its epibiotic community.

Topographic heterogeneity triggers complementary cascades that enhance ecosystem multifunctionality

open access: yesEcology, Volume 105, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract Topographic heterogeneity sets the stage for community assembly, but its effects on ecosystem functioning remain poorly understood. Here, we test the hypothesis that topographic heterogeneity underpins multiple cascading species interactions and functional pathways that indirectly control multifunctionality.

Feeding response of the polychaete Sabellaria alveolata (Sabellariidae) to changes in seston concentration [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2009
Sabellaria alveolata is a tube-building gregarious polychaete that constructs large biogenic reefs. In macrotidal shellfish ecosystems, this species competes for food with cultivated suspension-feeders. The suspension-feeding activity and clearance rate of S. alveolata were investigated in response to changes in seston concentration.

Genetic dis/similarities between western Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic populations of the honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata (Polychaeta: sabellariidae)

open access: yesThe European Zoological Journal
Thanks to their ability to build three-dimensional bioconstructions, Sabellaria worms strongly regulate community structure and ecosystem functioning in coastal ecosystems.
