Artificial Neural Networks for Defining the Operational Parameters of Sand Filters for Irrigation

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The difficulty in defining the working configuration during the operation of sand filters arises from the complexity of the relationships among the variables in the filtration and backwashing processes. The objective was to use artificial neural networks to model the pressure loss and removal efficiency of filtration in a commercial sand ...

Thermodynamic and microphysical properties of summertime marine fog observed from Sable Island

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Atmospheric profiling and near‐surface fog and visibility measurements revealed synoptic‐scale forcing as the dominant factor in fog formation over Sable Island, with deep fog layers under low‐pressure systems and shallow fog layers under high‐pressure systems.

Evaluating machine learning models for multi‐species wildlife detection and identification on remote sensed nadir imagery in South African savanna

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
This research paper investigates the efficacy of leading machine learning (ML) models for detecting and identifying ungulate species in African savanna using nadir imagery from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Traditional aerial counting methods, while widely used, suffer from significant limitations in accuracy and precision, in part due to human ...

Convective Motion in a Vibrated Granular Layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Experimental results are presented for a vertically shaken granular layer. In the range of accelerations explored, the layer develops a convective motion in the form of one or more rolls. The velocity of the grains near the wall has been measured.

The Welfare and Educational Impacts of Encounter Experiences and Displays on Zoo‐Housed Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens)

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
We investigated the extent and composition of red panda (Ailurus Fulgens spp.) encounters amongst 150 global zoos and their impact on animal longevity and reproduction. Comparative data analysis suggests that encounter animals produced more offspring and had higher longevity (survival) than non‐encounter animals with differences noted between ...

Effects of grain size distribution on the initial strain shear modulus of calcareous sand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The soil’s small strain shear modulus, Gmax or G0, is applied in dynamic behavior analyses and is correlated to other soil properties (density and void ratio) for predicting soil dynamic behavior under seismic loadings such as earthquakes, machinery or ...

Ecophysiology of an Avian Invader: Body Condition and Metabolic Rate Adjustments to Ambient Temperature

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study examines the ecophysiological responses of common waxbills to temperature variation in Portugal. We measured body condition and basal metabolic rate (BMR) during summer and winter across two regions in Portugal. Body condition was negatively correlated with temperature, while the relationship between BMR and temperature varied seasonally. In

An Overlooked Habitat‐Dependent Link Between Metabolism and Water Loss in Reptiles

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We measured the gas exchange of six lizard and six snake species, under high and low air humidity, and two intriguing patterns emerged. First, although desert species lose less water via evaporation than similar‐sized mesic species under similar conditions, water loss is virtually the same when each is exposed to its natural conditions.
