Freeze-Fracture Study of the Cell Junctions in the Utricle and Saccule

open access: closedActa Oto-Laryngologica, 1977
The maculae sacculi and utriculi of the chinchilla vestibular labyrinth have been studied by freeze-fracture method. In the replicas extensive zonulae occludentes have been found between sensory and supporting cells at the endolymphatic surface.

Comparing the Saccule‐to‐Utricle Ratio in Early‐ Versus Late‐Stage Meniere's Disease Patients

open access: closedThe Laryngoscope
To compare the saccule‐to‐utricle ratio in early‐ versus late‐stage Meniere's disease (MD) patients based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images.

Visualization of the saccule and utricle with non-contrast-enhanced FLAIR sequences

open access: closedEuropean Radiology, 2021
3D-fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) collected 4 h after intravenous gadolinium injection can delineate the perilymphatic space (PLS) from the endolymphatic space (ELS) to capture endolymphatic hydrops, the pathological counterpart of Ménière's disease.

Otolithic Membranes of the Saccule and Utricle in Man

open access: closedScience, 1967
The otolithic membranes of the human saccule and utricle can be prepared as whole mounts or surface specimens for microscopic examination. They are not simple, homogeneous, gelatinous structures as heretofore described. Instead, each shows a definite and characteristic fibrillar design, which appears to be correlated with the known cytoarchitectural ...

Morphometry of otoconia in the utricle and saccule of developing Japanese quail

open access: closedHearing Research, 2004
The development of otoconia in the utricular and saccular maculae from initial embryonic formation to adult stages was examined in Japanese quails. Both the morphology and size of the otoconia were quantified at different developmental stages. It was observed that the otoconia were initially formed on embryologic stage E5 in the saccule and E6 in the ...

The Effect of CO2and KTP laser on the cat saccule and utricle

open access: closedThe Laryngoscope, 2009
AbstractObjectives/Hypothesis:To assess the potential carbon dioxide (CO2) and potassium‐titanyl‐phosphate (KTP) laser‐related trauma to the saccule and utricle in a cat model.Study Design:Basic science experiment utilizing cat model. Methods:Twelve adult male cats were divided into two groups—CO2and KTP—to assess the potential saccule and/or utricle ...

Ontogenetic development of the inner ear saccule and utricle in the Lusitanian toadfish: Potential implications for auditory sensitivity

open access: closedHearing Research, 2017
Studies addressing structure-function relationships of the fish auditory system during development are sparse compared to other taxa. The Batrachoididae has become an important group to investigate mechanisms of auditory plasticity and evolution of auditory-vocal systems.

S-100 immunoreactivity identifies a subset of hair cells in the utricle and saccule of a fish

open access: closedHearing Research, 1990
Certain hair cells of fish exhibit strong immunoreactivity to an S-100 antibody. By their spatial locations in the utricle and saccule, these hair cells appear to possess a relatively short kinocilium and a roughly ovoid cell shape. In the utricle, these cells are predominantly located in the striola.
