Vegetative and Climatic Controls on Holocene Wildfire and Erosion Recorded in Alluvial Fans of the Middle Fork Salmon River, Idaho [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The Middle Fork Salmon River watershed spans high-elevation mixed-conifer forests to lower-elevation shrub-steppe. In recent decades, runoff from severely burned hillslopes has generated large debris flows in steep tributary drainages.

Evaluating the impact of hunter access and harvest regulations on elk movement and resource selection

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 3, April 2026.
We estimated daily probabilities of female elk transitioning between hunter access strategies during 4 periods of the fall hunting season in the Devil's Kitchen study area in central Montana, USA, 2020‐2023. Elk generally avoided harvest risk by selecting for less hunter access and more restrictive harvest regulations.

The potential of novel native plant materials for the restoration of novel ecosystems

open access: yesElementa: Science of the Anthropocene, 2015
Extensive ecological change has been sustained by many dryland ecosystems throughout the world, resulting in conversion to so-called novel ecosystems. It is within such ecological contexts that native plant materials destined for ecological applications ...

Development of an In Vitro Method of Propagation for Artemisia tridentata subsp. tridentata to Support Genome Sequencing and Genotype-by-Environment Research

open access: yesPlants, 2020
Basin big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. tridentata) is a keystone species of the sagebrush steppe, a widespread ecosystem of western North America threatened by climate change.

Climate influences the demography of three dominant sagebrush steppe plants

open access: yesEcology, 2011
Climate change could alter the population growth of dominant species, leading to profound effects on community structure and ecosystem dynamics. Understanding the links between historical variation in climate and population vital rates (survival, growth, recruitment) is one way to predict the impact of future climate change.

Environmental factors influencing detection of ring‐necked pheasant broods during August roadside surveys

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 3, April 2026.
We evaluated the influence of environmental factors on detection probability of ring‐necked pheasant broods surveyed during roadside surveys across 11 states. Wind speed, cloud cover, morning dew conditions, and soil moisture influenced detection probabilities and should be the focus of methodological or statistical control in future landscape‐scale ...

Does Wildfire and Cheatgrass Invasion in a Sage-steppe Ecosystem Change Soil Texture? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Fire and land-use changes influence vegetation types and alter below-ground carbon storage and soil characteristics; additionally, shrub-steppe environments are prone to cheatgrass invasion and subsequent alterations in soil morphology and ...

Finding the (small) cores: Spatial covariance tracks grassland bird community occupancy in fragmented grasslands

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Grasslands are an imperiled ecosystem, and grassland bird abundance is declining across North America. One of the strongest drivers for these declines is woody plant encroachment of grasslands. In the Great Plains and Sagebrush biomes of North America, spatial covariance—a remote‐sensing metric for tracking boundaries between vegetation types ...

Tools for Resilience Management: Multidisciplinary Development of State-and-Transition Models for Northwest Colorado

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2013
Building models is an important way of integrating knowledge. Testing and updating models of social-ecological systems can inform management decisions and, ultimately, improve resilience. We report on the outcomes of a six-year, multidisciplinary model
