Vaterite Sagittal Otoliths in Hatchery-Reared Juvenile Red Drums
The Progressive Fish-Culturist, 1994Abstract Aberrant otoliths, although uncommon, have been reported in many fish species. We examined sagittae, lapilli, and asterisci from 1,140 wild and 1,723 hatchery-reared juvenile red drums (Sciaenops ocellatus). Aberrant sagittae were found in 20 hatchery-reared fish.

AbstractOtoliths are calcareous anatomical structures in the inner ear of fishes, and they can be used in the discrimination of fish species and stocks due to their species‐specific shape. Sagittal otoliths in the Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis and Lepidorhombus boscii, two flatfish species of the same genus distributed in the Aegean Sea, were compared ...

Evaluation of Oxytetracycline Marks in Sagittal Otoliths of Juvenile Black Crappies
North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1996Abstract We validated oxytetracycline (OTC) mark production in the sagittal otoliths of juvenile black crappies Pomoxis nigromaculatus. Black crappies were marked en masse by immersion in a 500-mg oxytetracycline hydrochloride/L solution for 6 h. The exposure to OTC did not diminish survival over 31 weeks.

Variability of the sulcus acusticus in the sagittal otolith of the genus Merluccius (Merlucciidae)
Fisheries Research, 2000Abstract The morphology of the sulcus acusticus of the sacular otolith (sagitta) was studied by means of image analysis on 12 extant species of the genus Merluccius . The digitization of the sulcus acusticus and the subsequent biometric analysis, by means of multivariate methods and the Fourier descriptors of the perimeters obtained, allowed the ...

Abstract Annual increment periodicity has been validated in sagittal otoliths of Alligator Gar Atractosteus spatula; however, discontinuities (often referred to as false annuli or checks) are common in early years, potentially affecting both accuracy and precision.

Larvae and juveniles of Coilia ectenes were collected in the Yangtze Estuary during June through September 2009 and in May 2011. Our objectives were to reveal the otolith microstructural pattern, and then to reveal the early growth and development process through otolith analysis for C. ectenes.

The differentiation of Stegastes partitus populations using lapillar and sagittal otolith chemistry
Journal of Fish Biology, 2006The comparison of elemental concentrations of sagittal and lapillar otoliths from the same individuals of Stegastes partitus indicated significant differences for several elements. Sagittal otoliths were superior at differentiating individuals, yet the differentiation of individuals was further improved when the elemental concentrations of both otolith

Sagittal otoliths morphology were compared to identify five Pampus species of the Chinese coast (Chinese pomfret Pampus chinensis, grey pomfret P. cinereus, southern lesser pomfret P. minor, plumage pomfret P. punctatissmus, and Pampus sp.). Otoliths demonstrated species-specific characteristics with noticeable differences in overall shape, margin and ...

Sagittal otoliths are normally deposited as the CaCO3 polymorph aragonite; however, a proportion of otoliths transitions to vaterite during growth. This transition can complicate otolith chemistry analyses, as differences in the crystalline structure (aragonite or vaterite) of otoliths causes variation in otolith chemistry signatures.
