Educational Psychology Review, 1992In this reply, I respond to some of the objections raised by the reviewers. In particular, I comment on the rhetorical style of my original paper, the uniqueness of an educational semiotic, the possibility of deriving precise prescriptions for educational practice, and the value of semiotics as a foundation for education.

Informal exchanges framed the way in which political deals were made, opinions were tentatively questioned, news circulated, and Roman senators looked for information.
