Haemorrhagic septicaemia in saiga

GEORGINA Mills summarises a mass mortality event (MME) of saiga antelope from haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) over three weeks in Kazakhstan in 2015 ( VR , 27 January 2018, vol 182, p 97). Pasteurella multocida type B was identified, with no reference to somatic antigens.

AbstractThe intralimb indices and calcaneal linear metrics are known as the reliable predictors of locomotor adaptation in artiodactyls. The osteological features of hindlimb in adult Saiga (Saiga tatarica) were described, and its correlation with cursoriality and habitat adaptation was discussed.

Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was isolated in low numbers from the small intestine and associated mesenteric lymph nodes of a saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) using routine culture techniques in spite of histologic evidence of high numbers of acid-fast bacteria in these tissues.

TOXOPLASMOSIS IN CAPTIVE SAIGA ANTELOPE

Disseminated toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) from a Canadian zoo. Multiple foci of necrosis were found in most tissues of the animals. Toxoplasma cysts were found in association with these lesions. Toxoplasma trophozoites were recovered from mice injected with infected tissues.
