Digital Sovereignty and the EU's Identity Between Technological Innovation and European Values

open access: yesJCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract The debate around ‘digital sovereignty’ identifies tensions rooted in the disparity between the EU's considerable economic and regulatory power in digital matters and its limited mandate and capabilities in foreign policy. Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered a strategic industry in Europe and abroad.

Import competition and stock price crash risk

open access: yesJournal of Financial Research, EarlyView.
Abstract We investigate how globalization‐induced import competition affects stock price crash risk. Import competition increases price pressure and reduces profit margins, prompting managers to withhold negative information, resulting in higher crash risk. Based on a sample of US manufacturing firms from 1974 to 2019, we find that firms whose products

Mutual fund director compensation

open access: yesJournal of Financial Research, EarlyView.
Abstract We examine director compensation using a large sample of hand‐compiled U.S. mutual fund data. We find that director compensation is positively correlated with observable productive characteristics—workload, experience, and demographics—that capture the benefits from the directors’ monitoring effort.

How Do SMEs Respond to Deglobalization? Insights from Italian SMEs in the Interwar Period (1936–1943)

open access: yesJournal of Management Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigates how small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) respond to deglobalization and economic nationalism, using historical evidence from fascist Italy, a period of autarky and restricted international trade. While prior research has focused primarily on larger firms, especially multinational enterprises (MNEs), the strategic ...

Regenerative Supply Chains: A Knowledge Polycentrism View

open access: yesJournal of Supply Chain Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The field of regenerative supply chains investigates how companies collaboratively preserve, restore and enhance the social and natural capital from which they procure. However, this field has still not addressed a fundamental question: How do supply chain managers organize the complex knowledge that underpins regeneration? The authors advance

Fascinating single‐cell red algae: models for evolution and adaptation

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary The unicellular red algae, Cyanidiophyceae, that diverged early during Archaeplastida (algal and plant) evolution, occupy a variety of extreme habitats that are inhospitable for most other eukaryotes. With the use of modern genomics and genetics methods, Cyanidiophyceae show a remarkable taxonomic diversity, share haplodiplophasic life cycles ...

A Chemical Probe for Increasing Leaf Tocopherol Levels by Coordinated Modulation of Biosynthesis, Competition and Storage

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plant biofortification with phytonutrients typically relies on metabolic engineering strategies known as ‘push’ (enhancing biosynthetic flux), ‘block’ (inhibiting competing pathways) and ‘pull’ (promoting metabolite storage). Here, we describe a novel synthetic compound, X57, that simultaneously targets biosynthesis, competition and storage to

FieldDino: Rapid In‐Field Stomatal Anatomy and Physiology Phenotyping

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Stomatal anatomy and physiology define CO2 availability for photosynthesis and regulate plant water use. Despite being key drivers of yield and dynamic responsiveness to abiotic stresses, conventional measurement techniques of stomatal traits are laborious and slow, limiting adoption in plant breeding.
