Heterochrony, cannibalism, and the evolution of viviparity in Salamandra salamandra [PDF]
SUMMARY The way in which novelties that lead to macroevolutionary events originate is a major question in evolutionary biology, and one that can be addressed using the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) as a model system. It is exceptional among amphibians in displaying intraspecific diversity of reproductive strategies. In S.

A case of color aberration in a fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) larva [PDF]
Color aberrations in salamanders are caused by defective chromatophores or by disrupted synthesis of the pigments, and have been previously reported in Europe.

Dispersal is a key process in ecology and evolutionary biology, as it shapes biodiversity patterns over space and time. Attitude to disperse is unevenly distributed among individuals within populations, and that individual personality can have pivotal ...

Reliability of the post-hoc measurement on Salamandra salamandra.
The reliability of the post hoc measurement, a non-invasive method for measuring wild animals, was tested on Salamandra salamandra. Our results show that SVL measured in the field was lower than SVL estimated from images by three operators and that the estimates were highly consistent.

Species detection from aquatic eDNA: Assessing the importance of capture methods
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is increasingly used for biodiversity monitoring, particularly in aquatic systems. However, each step, from sample collection to bioinformatic analysis, can introduce biases and influence the reliability of results.

Demography and spatial activity of fire salamanders, Salamandra salamandra (Linnaeus, 1758), in two contrasting habitats in the Vienna Woods [PDF]
Understanding population dynamics is vital in amphibian conservation. To compare demography and movements, we conducted a capture-recapture study over three spring seasons in two populations of Salamandra salamandra in the Vienna Woods.

Habitat features and distribution of Salamandra salamandra in underground springs
Subterranean habitats are among the less known terrestrial habitats, but can reveal an unexpected biodiversity, and can play an underestimated role for amphibians.

A near-natural experiment on factors influencing larval drift in Salamandra salamandra
The larval stage of the European fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) inhabits both lentic and lotic habitats. In the latter, they are constantly exposed to unidirectional water flow, which has been shown to cause downstream drift in a variety of taxa.

Amphibian chytridiomycosis : a review with focus on fungus-host interactions [PDF]
Amphibian declines and extinctions are emblematic for the current sixth mass extinction event. Infectious drivers of these declines include the recently emerged fungal pathogens Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans ...
