Epidemiological tracing of Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans identifies widespread infection and associated mortalities in private amphibian collections [PDF]
The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) infects newts and salamanders (urodele amphibians), in which it can cause fatal disease.

Metamorphosis and lncRNAs: A Close Relationship
ABSTRACT The classical definition of metamorphosis is a post‐embryonic transformation, such as from a tadpole to a froglet. However, recent studies suggest this process occurs to some degree in all vertebrates, as the underlying endocrine and molecular pathways are highly conserved. With the advent of high‐throughput sequencing, transcriptomic data for

We repeatedly tested 158 individual long‐tailed finches, Poephila acuticauda, of two different sub‐species and their hybrids for differences in their flight performances. Several flight performance variables were repeatable across individuals. Contrary to expectations, P. a. hecki individuals did not display superior flight performance to P.

Rabl's model of the interphase chromosome arrangement tested in Chinise hamster cells by premature chromosome condensation and laser-UV-microbeam experiments [PDF]
In 1885 Carl Rabl published his theory on the internal structure of the interphase nucleus. We have tested two predictions of this theory in fibroblasts grown in vitro from a female Chinese hamster, namely (1) the Rabl-orientation of interphase ...

The study provides evidence that animals considered as strictly linked to subterranean habitats can exhibit behavioral responses to constraints occurring in surface environments. We studied the blind and depigmented shrimp Troglocaris planinensis in the Classical Karst using field and experimental approaches.

Habitat adaptation rather than genetic distance correlates with female preference in fire salamanders () [PDF]
Background: Although some mechanisms of habitat adaptation of conspecific populations have been recently elucidated, the evolution of female preference has rarely been addressed as a force driving habitat adaptation in natural settings.

Feuersalamander - Salamandra salamandra
