Measuring athletic performance in post-metamorphic fire salamanders

open access: yesBMC Research Notes, 2021
Objective Athletic performances are dynamic movements that are physically challenging and often predict individual success in ecological contexts. They stem from a complex integration of multiple phenotypic traits—e.g., morphological, physiological and ...

A new subspecies of African fire salamander Salamandra algira (Urodela, Salamandridae) from the Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco [PDF]

open access: yesZooKeys, 2019
A new subspecies within the Salamandra algira species complex from north-western Africa is described. Previous molecular analysis showed that the populations of S.

MENOS-QUE-HUMANO: FRONTERAS POROSAS EN “MISTER TAYLOR” DE AUGUSTO MONTERROSO Y “LA SALAMANDRA” DE MERCÈ RODOREDA

open access: yesLejana, 2021
Este trabajo se centra en dos cuentos, “Mister Taylor” de Augusto Monterroso y “La salamandra” de Mercè Rodoreda, con el objetivo de analizar las peculiaridades del término “menos-que-humano”.

A case of color aberration in a fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) larva [PDF]

open access: yesHerpetozoa, 2020
Color aberrations in salamanders are caused by defective chromatophores or by disrupted synthesis of the pigments, and have been previously reported in Europe.

Heterochrony, cannibalism, and the evolution of viviparity in Salamandra salamandra [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution & Development, 2007
SUMMARY The way in which novelties that lead to macroevolutionary events originate is a major question in evolutionary biology, and one that can be addressed using the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) as a model system. It is exceptional among amphibians in displaying intraspecific diversity of reproductive strategies. In S.

Reliability of the post-hoc measurement on Salamandra salamandra.

open access: yes, 2021
The reliability of the post hoc measurement, a non-invasive method for measuring wild animals, was tested on Salamandra salamandra. Our results show that SVL measured in the field was lower than SVL estimated from images by three operators and that the estimates were highly consistent.

Species detection from aquatic eDNA: Assessing the importance of capture methods

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, 2021
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is increasingly used for biodiversity monitoring, particularly in aquatic systems. However, each step, from sample collection to bioinformatic analysis, can introduce biases and influence the reliability of results.

Demography and spatial activity of fire salamanders, Salamandra salamandra (Linnaeus, 1758), in two contrasting habitats in the Vienna Woods [PDF]

open access: yesHerpetozoa, 2021
Understanding population dynamics is vital in amphibian conservation. To compare demography and movements, we conducted a capture-recapture study over three spring seasons in two populations of Salamandra salamandra in the Vienna Woods.

Habitat features and distribution of Salamandra salamandra in underground springs

open access: yesActa Herpetologica, 2009
Subterranean habitats are among the less known terrestrial habitats, but can reveal an unexpected biodiversity, and can play an underestimated role for amphibians.

Clinal Variation in Reproductive Modes and Offspring Body Condition Across a Contact Zone of a Bimodal Viviparous Salamander [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We examined clinal gradients in reproductive modes and associated offspring body condition across a hybrid zone between two bimodal viviparous subspecies of Salamandra salamandra. We found a clear cline in reproductive modes, with pure modes at the extremes and mixed modes in central populations.
