Evaluating synthetic substitutes to reduce illegal harvesting and support species recovery

Abstract Providing synthetic substitutes is a widely promoted strategy to shift consumer demand away from wildlife products derived from threatened species. Yet, there is little evidence on whether product substitution prevents illegal or unsustainable harvesting and contributes to the recovery of threatened populations.

Predation on Artificial Caterpillars Varies With Vertical Stratification but Not Light Gradients in a Sugar Maple Temperate Forest

Predation pressure varies vertically, with highest arthropod predation in the understory and highest bird predation in the canopy. Light availability differs across vertical strata, but predation patterns are more strongly influenced by height and forest structure than by light gradients.

Behavioral Responses of Two Common Woodland Salamanders to Novel Urban Stimuli

We examined behavioral responses of the Eastern Red‐backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) and Northern Ravine Salamander (P. electromorphus) to novel urban stimuli. The Northern Ravine Salamander exhibited increased thigmotaxis in the presence of concrete pavers simulating roads and walkways.

Redox environment modulates in vitro aggregation of Ataxin‐3, the protein implicated in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3. Reducing conditions stabilize native monomers and prevent aggregation, whereas oxidative conditions promote the formation of non‐native conformers and disulfide‐linked oligomers within the Josephin domain (JD).
