This chapter aims at introducing to saline lakes, which are defined by a salinity ≥ 3.0‰. Saline lakes are distributed from ice-covered regions to hot deserts, from the lowest point on earth's surface to altitudes of more than 4500 m. They are land-locked water bodies and show a broad range of chemical composition, salinity and biodiversity.
