This chapter aims at introducing to saline lakes, which are defined by a salinity ≥ 3.0‰. Saline lakes are distributed from ice-covered regions to hot deserts, from the lowest point on earth's surface to altitudes of more than 4500 m. They are land-locked water bodies and show a broad range of chemical composition, salinity and biodiversity.

China has many saline lakes. Most occur in the west and north-east. Four main regions can be distinguished: Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, North western, North-central and Eastern. All types of chemical composition occur, but some regionalization of types is found. The Palaeolimnology of many saline lakes in China has been investigated, and a variety of dating

Saline lake ecosystems of Mexico
Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management, 1998Abstract This paper aims to draw attention to the need to better know and understand Mexican saline lakes. It does this by outlining their distribution, abundance and location and their physical, chemical and biological characteristics. The influence of climatic factors on saline lakes is discussed. To sharpen the focus of the general discussion, a few

Isabela Crater-Lake: a Mexican insular saline lake
Hydrobiologia, 1998The Isabela Crater-Lake is a bright-green, hypersaline lake (68–112.5 mS cm-1) on Isabela Island off the Pacific coast of Nayarit, Mexico. Some salient features were documented in November 1993. It appears meromictic, with three well-defined strata separated by sharp pycnoclines.

THE SALINE LAKES OF SASKATCHEWAN
Canadian Journal of Research, 1944Sixty lakes in central and southern Saskatchewan were investigated during the years 1938 to 1943. Most of these are saline and lie within the aspen parkland. A few freshwater lakes from the adjacent forest zone were included for comparison. Physical and chemical studies included observation of depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen, light penetration ...

Saline lakes are important environmental features in continental basins worldwide. They are critical for water and mineral resources, economic activity, and paleoenvironmental studies. Water and solute sources for saline lake brines are direct precipitation, surface flow, local or regional meteoric groundwaters, interstitial water of sediments, or deep
