There are several reasons why lakes are (or become) saline. Evidence lies in lagoons along open oceans where seawater may percolate through sandy barriers and lakes become saline or brackish, occasionally transforming their character. Further inland, saline lakes accumulate salt content by freshwater inflow and river discharge that carries minimal ...

Saline Lakes and Lake Districts
1997Qinghai—Tibet Plateau in southern Asia has an average elevation of over 4500 m and fully deserves its description as the roof of the world. Numerous bright and colourful lakes of various sizes are scattered over the vast plateau and constitute an important feature of the natural landscape of the region.

1987
Most of the chapters of this Symposium have dealt with terrestrial ecosystems. However, a limnologist studying a lake ecosystem has a substantial advantage over most of his terrestrially oriented colleagues: he knows the boundary of his system. Of course the situation is somewhat complicated by in- and outflows, so that not even lakes can be regarded ...

Fallout Plutonium in an Alkaline, Saline Lake
Science, 1980Plutonium isotopes, derived from global fallout following atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, have been measured in the water and sediments of a natural alkaline, saline lake. The activities of fallout plutonium in the water column are about two orders of magnitude greater than in most freshwater lakes, where these nuclides are found predominantly ...

Paleolimnological studies of saline lakes
Journal of Paleolimnology, 1993Salt water lakes are located in arid to semi-arid regions where evaporation rates exceed precipitation rates. As such, saline lakes are very sensitive to changes in their hydrological cycle. Research into the current limnology of saline lakes is expanding as population growth in these regions increases.

Gallocanta Saline Lake, Iberian Chain
2014Gallocanta Lake, covering 14.5 km2, is the greatest ephemeral saline lake in Europe. It is located in the Iberian Chain, NE Spain, in the bottom of a karst polje. The Gallocanta saline lake formed once Jurassic limestones were almost completely corroded, and the floor of the depression was underlain by Triassic clays and evaporites. The late Quaternary
