Calibrating DSSAT–CROPGRO–Tomato to optimize stage-specific deficit irrigation for processing tomato across hydrological year types

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
Deficit irrigation is a promising strategy for improving agricultural water productivity in arid and semi-arid regions, but its effectiveness depends strongly on crop phenology and interannual hydroclimatic variability.

MARK4 enhances stress granule formation under oxidative stress and increases tau accumulation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
MARK4 (red dots) localizes to stress granules (orange dots) and promotes their formation under oxidative stress by modulating TIA1 (blue dots). MARK4 and TIA1 synergistically increase tau (purple) accumulation, and the reduction of the TIA1 ortholog suppresses neurodegeneration in a fly model.

Research and development progress report 40

open access: yes, 1960
Report presenting a study of a plant to produce 10,000,000 gallons per day of fresh water from sea water. The process used is direct freezing brought about by the evaporation of a hydrocarbon refrigerant in contact with sea water, washing the ice free of

Straw incorporation: A more effective coastal saline land reclamation approach to boost sunflower yield than straw mulching or burial

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
In coastal lands, soil salinity greatly impedes crops growth and severely affects the agricultural productivity. Returning the crop straw and residual to soil was considered an important land reclamation method; however, the approach of straw return ...

TRPML1 agonist ML‐SA5 attenuates pulmonary fibroblast activation by suppressing mTOR and restoring autophagic flux

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TGF‐β1 stimulation downregulates lysosomal channel TRPML1 in pulmonary fibroblasts. The TRPML1 agonist ML‐SA5 suppressed fibroblast‐to‐myofibroblast activation and collagen production. Mechanistically, ML‐SA5 inhibited mTOR phosphorylation, restored autophagic flux, and its effects were enhanced by rapamycin (mTOR inhibitor) and reversed by MHY1485 ...

Beta1 subunits enable fentanyl‐induced BK channel activation and opioid regulation of cerebral artery diameter

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
During the current opioid crisis, the majority of overdose deaths are attributed to ultra‐potent synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl. While fentanyl exerts its action via opioid receptors, we propose that potassium channels in the brain blood vessels may also sense fentanyl.

Effect of Saline Irrigation Water on Alfalfa Growth and Development in Saline–Alkali Soils

open access: yes
Saline irrigation water can enhance agricultural production in water-scarce regions. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a moderately saline-tolerant legume forage grass, and growing alfalfa in saline–alkali areas under irrigated conditions has high ...

Irrigation sequence regulates root-zone water-salt dynamics, growth kinetics, and yield formation of greenhouse tomato under saline-fresh water rotation

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
Efficient saline-water use in arid greenhouse production requires irrigation schedules that coordinate salt exposure with crop salt-sensitivity windows while limiting residual soil salinity.

Using fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy to quantify molecular dynamics within cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Microscopy techniques like fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and number and brightness analysis (N&B) allow to quantify concentrations, diffusion rates, and oligomerization of fluorescently labeled molecules in the living cell. In this protocol the principles of how to set up these types of experiments are described including calibration ...
