Groundwater mapping and locally engaged water governance in a small island terrain: Case study of Karainagar island, Northern Sri Lanka

open access: yesWorld Water Policy, Volume 9, Issue 3, Page 456-480, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Groundwater is a vital resource under threat in island communities. Karainagar, a 22 km2 island, is one of seven islands off the coast of Jaffna in Northern Sri Lanka, with its population of just about 11,000 persons, experiences seasonal water shortage, and salinity in groundwater as twin threats impacting on their lives.

Does the loss of diadromy imply the loss of salinity tolerance? A gene expression study with replicate nondiadromous populations of Galaxias maculatus

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 9, Page 2219-2233, May 2023., 2023
Abstract The recurrent colonization of freshwater habitats and subsequent loss of diadromy is a major ecological transition that has been reported in many ancestrally diadromous fishes. Such residency is often accompanied by a loss of tolerance to seawater.

Ecological relevance of non‐perennial rivers for the conservation of terrestrial and aquatic communities

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 6, December 2022., 2022
Abstract River conservation efforts traditionally focus on perennial watercourses (i.e., those that do not dry) and their associated aquatic biodiversity. However, most of the global river network is not perennial and thus supports both aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity. We assessed the conservation value of nonperennial rivers and streams (NPRS) in

Representation of the world's biophysical conditions by the global protected area network

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 2, April 2022., 2022
Abstract Protected areas (PAs) are often implemented without consideration of already existing PAs, which is likely to cause an overrepresentation of certain biophysical conditions. We assessed the representativeness of the current PA network with regard to the world's biophysical conditions to highlight which conditions are underprotected and where ...

Primary succession in an Atlantic salt marsh: From intertidal flats to mid‐marsh platform in 35 years

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 8, Page 2909-2921, August 2021., 2021
Facilitation plays a central role in saltmarsh development in this study of primary succession. We chronicle changes in the sedimentary environment, geomorphology and plant colonisation over 35 years, as intertidal flats were transformed into a mid‐marsh platform.

Antioxidative enzymatic protection in leaves of two contrasting cowpea cultivars under salinity

open access: yesBiologia Plantarum, 2010
The aim of this work was to investigate the role of the antioxidant enzymes in salt tolerance comparing the salt-sensitive (Pérola) and a salt-tolerant (Pitiúba) cultivar of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]. Salt stress (100 mM NaCl for 8 d) reduced
