Drivers of groundwater salinization and ecosystem change on Mid-Atlantic barrier islands
Michael, Holly A.Coastal groundwater is an important natural resource for a large number of people living in coastal zones where surface water is often saline.

This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE SALINIZATION PROCESS
This article analyzes the process of soil salinization, its main causes, and its ecological and economic consequences. It discusses the natural and anthropogenic factors leading to salinization, as well as the changes occurring in the physical and ...

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Analysis of mechanism of the salinization process and the salinity variation in Bosten lake
The salinizing process of Bosten lake is attributed to the human-activities and the climatic process in the past several decades. Based on the relation between the lake's salinity and the salt budgets, a meaningful equation expressed with the factors of ...

Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Soil and aquifer salinization: toward an integrated approach for salinity management of groundwater
Degradation of the quality of groundwater due to salinization processes is one of the key issues limiting the global dependence on groundwater in aquifers. As the salinization of shallow aquifers is closely related to root-zone salinization, the two must
