Ultrasound (US) proved highly effective for detection and localisation of stones in salivary glands. Because of the high accuracy and the possibility to detect non-opaque stones sonography should be performed as a supplementary measure if on plain film the localisation of the calculi is questionable.

[Treatment of salivary gland calculi by extracorporeal lithotripsy].

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal lithotripsy (ECL) in the treatment of salivary stones. In a prospective study, 15 patients suffering from sialolithiasis were treated by applying extracorporeally generated shock waves. No patients needed general anaesthesia, sedatives, or analgesics.

Four patients were subjected to sialolithotomy of the submandibular gland in the Department of Otolaryngology, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The resected calculi were examined under a scanning electron microscope and chemical analysis of their structure was carried out.
