Single phage-typing set for differentiating salmonellae [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 1977
A phage-typing system is described for characterizing commonly isolated salmonellae. Fifty-eight serovars representative of groups A, B, C1, C2, D, E1, E2, E3, and E4 were delineated by using a single set of 50 phages isolated from sewage. All of the 735 cultures used in this effort were typable and were distinguished and differentiated on the basis of

Mechanisms of Multi-strain Coexistence in Host-Phage Systems with Nested Infection Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
Bacteria and their viruses ("bacteriophages") coexist in natural environments forming complex infection networks. Recent empirical findings suggest that phage-bacteria infection networks often possess a nested structure such that there is a hierarchical relationship among who can infect whom.

Mathematical Modeling of CRISPR-CAS system effects on biofilm formation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR), linked with CRISPR associated (CAS) genes, play a profound role in the interactions between phage and their bacterial hosts. It is now well understood that CRISPR-CAS systems can confer adaptive immunity against bacteriophage infections.

PhaGO: Protein function annotation for bacteriophages by integrating the genomic context [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Bacteriophages are viruses that target bacteria, playing a crucial role in microbial ecology. Phage proteins are important in understanding phage biology, such as virus infection, replication, and evolution. Although a large number of new phages have been identified via metagenomic sequencing, many of them have limited protein function annotation ...

How the other half lives: CRISPR-Cas's influence on bacteriophages [PDF]

open access: yesEvolutionary Biology : Self, Non-Self Evolution, Species and Complex Traits, Evolution, Methods and Concepts, ISBN 978-3-319-61569-1, edited by Pierre Pontarotti, Springer Nature, September 2017, pp. 63-85, 2017
CRISPR-Cas is a genetic adaptive immune system unique to prokaryotic cells used to combat phage and plasmid threats. The host cell adapts by incorporating DNA sequences from invading phages or plasmids into its CRISPR locus as spacers. These spacers are expressed as mobile surveillance RNAs that direct CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins to protect ...

Genomic and Proteomic Analysis of Six Vi01-like Phages Reveals Wide Host Range and Multiple Tail Spike Proteins

open access: yesViruses
Enterobacteriaceae is a large family of Gram-negative bacteria composed of many pathogens, including Salmonella and Shigella. Here, we characterize six bacteriophages that infect Enterobacteriaceae, which were isolated from wastewater plants in the ...

The Process of Infection with Bacteriophage øX174 XIII. Evidence for an Essential Bacterial "Site" [PDF]

open access: yes, 1967
The burst of a starved bacterium infected with several øX174 bacteriophage was usually found to contain genetic traits of only one of the possible parents; less often, two phage multiplied in the same host cell.
