Sexual Development, 2009Salmonids are descended from a common ancestor that underwent an autotetraploidization event. After a whole genome duplication species could deal with sex determination by deleting one copy of <i>SEX, </i>the sex determining locus, or by recruiting a duplicated transcription factor to become a novel sex determining gene.

Some aspects of growth in the Family Salmonidae
1957Mathematical descriptions of the growth of animals are reviewed in the light of applicability to two species of the Family Salmonidae. No generalized growth equation is found to accurately depict growth for the material discussed. Theoretical and practical limitations of the use of age as a classification for relating growth rates are given.

The influence of ovarian fluid on the gamete physiology in the Salmonidae
Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 2002The present study investigated the influence of ovarian fluid (OV) on the gamete physiology in the brown trout (Salmo trutta f. fario). In comparison to water OV prolongs the duration of sperm motility for >'5 min and the fertilizability of eggs for >'10 min independent from the quality of the egg batch from which the OV derived.

1885In the » Verhaudlungen tier k. k. zoologisch-botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien” (Jahrg. 1863) Dr. Steindachner describes 3 monstrous beads of carps, presented to the Museum of Vienna, and suggests that these monstrosities could not be the results of some former wound, but that the deformity was caused by the pathological state of some part of the skull.
