Abstract Triploidy is an effective tool for producing sterile fishes but often results in impaired performance in commercial aquaculture. In light of this, our study compared the physiological response to exhaustive exercise in juvenile diploid and triploid Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, a polar species with great potential for aquaculture.

PCR-RFLP Method to Identify Salmonid Species of Economic Importance
The identification of different fish species by molecular methods has become necessary to avoid both the incorrect labelling of individuals involved in repopulation programmes and the commercial frauds on the fish market.

Abstract In teleost fishes, cortisol is the major corticoid and has both glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid actions. However, how fish tissues discriminate between these distinct corticosteroid actions is unclear. In mammals, the major factors responsible for intracellular corticosteroid regulation are glucocorticoid receptors (grs) and the ...

Genes, fish and fisheries: translating science into policy
Abstract The 2024 Annual Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles reviewed the burgeoning impact of ‘omics’ technologies on fish ecology, management and forecasting. As with life sciences more generally, major advances in speed, cost‐effectiveness and breadth of applications in ‘omics’ has had profound societal and environmental impacts.

Bridging the protein gap with single-cell protein use in aquafeeds
Blue foods from aquaculture are essential in bridging the protein gap to feed the human population in the future. However, for aquaculture production to be sustainable, production must be within planetary boundaries, and sourcing of sustainable raw ...

Abstract Effective species conservation and management requires comprehensive biomonitoring, enhanced by combining traditional and newer methodologies, such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses. A seasonal pulse of spawning adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was detected by normalised eDNA 12S reads from metabarcoding, which facilitated estimation of ...

Genetic Improvement in Salmonids
There is considerable interest in the cultivation of salmonids in several countries. In Norway it is now a question of rate of expansion rather than a question of whether this industry will develop or not.
