Instability mechanism and failure characteristics of underground cavern in block system under the action of seismic waves

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Seismic waves with tensile stress, high amplitude, and low frequency are most likely to trigger block instability and sliding. Blocks with a single sliding surface are more prone to movement than those with multiple constraints, and roof‐positioned blocks are especially vulnerable to slide.

Stability Evaluation of Horizontal Salt Caverns for Gas Storage in Two Mining Layers: A Case Study in China

open access: yesEnergies, 2023
To increase natural gas storage capacity and further utilize salt mine resources, salt cavern gas storage in the Yunying salt mine, Hubei Province, China, was simultaneously constructed in two different mining layers (K3 and K4).

Neutron background in large-scale xenon detectors for dark matter searches

open access: yes, 2004
Simulations of the neutron background for future large-scale particle dark matter detectors are presented. Neutrons were generated in rock and detector elements via spontaneous fission and (alpha,n) reactions, and by cosmic-ray muons.

Impact of thixotropy on flow patterns induced in a stirred tank : numerical and experimental studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Agitation of a thixotropic shear-thinning fluid exhibiting a yield stress is investigated both experimentally and via simulations. Steady-state experiments are conducted at three impeller rotation rates (1, 2 and 8 s−1) for a tank stirred with an axial ...

Analytical stress solution framework for lined compressed air energy storage chambers and its application to safe burial depth determination and supporting effectiveness evaluation

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
An analytical framework delivers a closed‐form stress solution for lined compressed air energy storage chambers, enabling the determination of the minimum safe burial depth. The solution quantitatively evaluates lining support effectiveness, offering a reliable tool for chamber design and optimization.

Development opportunity of salt-cavern gas storage in new-type power system

open access: yesYou-qi chuyun, 2022
Some achievements have been made in a province of China for old cavern reconstruction of salt-cavern gas storage, but some of the reconstructed caverns are not suitable to be used as underground gas storages for peak sheaving of pipeline network due to ...

Multiphase Flow and Cavern Abandonment in Salt [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This report will explore the hypothesis that an underground cavity in gassy salt will eventually be gas filled as is observed on a small scale in some naturally occurring salt inclusions. First, a summary is presented on what is known about gas occurrences, flow mechanisms, and cavern behavior after abandonment.
