Hydrogen sulfide in underground hydrogen storage sites: Implication of thermochemical sulfate reduction

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, Volume 4, Issue 4, Page 709-724, December 2025.
A one‐dimensional diffusion‐based mass transport model was built using PHREEQC to highlight the potential challenges posed by thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) in depleted gas fields. The results obtained indicated that the presence of iron minerals (pyrite and hematite) is crucial for H2S generation through TSR reactions.

Rapid Depresurizations: Can they lead to irreversible damage?

open access: yes, 2012
International audienceRapid gas depressurization leads to gas cooling that is followed by slow gas warming when the cavern is kept idle. The decrease in the temperature of gas depends upon the relative withdrawal rate (in %/day), and cavern size and ...

Large scale underground energy storage for renewables integration: general criteria for reservoir identification and viable technologies. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The increasing integration of renewable energies in the electricity grid contributes considerably to achieve the European Union goals on energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions reduction. However, it also brings problems to grid management.

Minimum operating pressure for a gas storage salt cavern under an emergency: a case study of Jintan, China

open access: yesOil & Gas Science and Technology, 2020
Decreasing the gas pressure is one of the most effective methods to increase the working gas capacity of salt cavern Underground Gas Storages (UGS). In this paper, KING-1 and -2 caverns of Jintan salt cavern UGS, Jiangsu province, China, are studied as ...

Mechanical responses of deep salt caverns under synchronous and asynchronous operation strategies

open access: yesEnergy Geoscience
In China, gas storage in deep salt caverns faces challenges due to high in situ stresses, elevated geothermal temperatures, and the presence of interbedded salt-mudstone formations. These factors lead to heterogeneous deformation and stress concentration,

Mechanical stability of a salt cavern submitted to high-frequency cycles

open access: yes, 2012
International audienceStorage of natural gas in salt caverns had been developed mainly for seasonal storage, resulting in a small number of yearly pressure cycles and moderate gas-production rates.
