Passive versus active salt diapirism
AAPG Bulletin, 2021Existing definitions for passive and active salt diapirism are somewhat overlapping and ambiguous. These terms are also equated to downbuilding and upbuilding, respectively, which are problematic concepts as originally conceived and even as subsequently modified.

Mechanics of active salt diapirism
Tectonophysics, 1993Abstract An active diapir forcefully intrudes its overburden, driven by diapir pressure that overcomes the resistance of the overburden strength. Possible causes for the driving pressure are differential loading of the source layer and a density contrast with the overburden.

Megaflaps adjacent to salt diapirs
AAPG Bulletin, 2016Megaflaps are steep stratal panels that extend far up the sides of diapirs or their equivalent welds. They have multiple-kilometer fold widths and structural relief and are thus distinct from smaller-scale composite halokinetic sequences. Maximum dips range from near-vertical to completely overturned.

Carbonate formation and alteration in the salt diapir caprock (Paskhand salt diapir, Southern Iran)
2023The eastern Zagros Fold and Thrust Belt (ZFTB) in Iran includes a salt tectonic province with roughly 130 salt-gypsum diapirs emerging within the Neoproterozoic-Early Cambrian Hormuz Complex. The diapirs in the ZFTB differ in composition and in their distribution of exposed caprock mélanges (CRMs).
