Between Care and Control: Age Assessments and the Regulation of Unaccompanied and Asylum‐Seeking Children

open access: yesChild &Family Social Work, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article offers a critical conceptual review of age assessments in England and examines their implications for unaccompanied asylum‐seeking children (UASC). Drawing on Foucault's theories of biopower and governmentality, age assessments are conceptualied as technologies of control that set the parameters for who is deemed ‘deserving’ of ...

Hampton-Seabrook Estuary Habitat Restoration Compendium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The goal of this report is to identify restoration opportunities within the watershed derived from data on habitat change. Many other factors exist that are important in the identification and selection of restoration projects, including water quality ...

Scenarios and strategies for future‐proofing ecosystem management under climatic novelty

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Climate change is driving unprecedented declines in dominant, habitat‐forming foundation species across marine and terrestrial ecosystems globally. As climatic novelty becomes the norm, ecosystem reassembly will become increasingly common. Predicting and understanding these transitions, and their implications for future ecosystem functioning ...

Assessment of ecosystem status in Mozambique and implications for environmental planning

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
We assess Mozambique's terrestrial ecosystems using the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems framework, showing that more than half of Mozambique's ecosystems are threatened, with impacts primarily concentrated in temperate subhumid grasslands and pyric tussock savannas.

California's Endangered Belding’s Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis beldingi): Tolerance of Pedestrian Disturbance

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2009
Salt marshes constitute habitat islands for many endemic animal species, particularly along the California coast, where urban sprawl has fragmented this habitat.

Remote sensing of tidal networks and their relation to vegetation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The study of the morphology of tidal networks and their relation to salt marsh vegetation is currently an active area of research, and a number of theories have been developed which require validation using extensive observations. Conventional methods of

Linking food web functioning and habitat diversity for an ecosystem based management: A Mediterranean lagoon case-study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We propose a modelling approach relating the functioning of a transitional ecosystem with the spatial extension of its habitats. A test case is presented for the lagoon of Venice, discussing the results in the context of the application of current EU ...

Integrating ecological feedbacks across scales and levels of organization

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
In ecosystems, species interact in various ways with other species, and with their local environment. In addition, ecosystems are coupled in space by diverse types of flows. From these links connecting different ecological entities can emerge circular pathways of indirect effects: feedback loops.
