Are calcareous soil ecosystems and associated drainage waters less susceptible to damage from winter road salting than acidic soil ecosystems? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Previous studies of upland roadside soils in Cumbria, that would normally be naturally acidic, have highlighted that (a) runoff from roads subjected to long-term road salting can dramatically raise soil pH down slope in upland areas; (b) the soil pH ...

Evaluation of yam (Dioscorea rotundata) chips pre-treatment conditions (salting, sulphiting, and blanching) combined with dehydrofrozen storage for fries production [PDF]

open access: yesActa Periodica Technologica
Yam is a highly perishable commodity lacking commercial utilization, like potato for French fries production. Frozen yam chips could be a panacea for its increased utilization as fries and export commodity for Nigeria.

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

Effect of Low-salt Curing on the Quality of Crisp Grass Carp after Freeze-thaw Treatment

open access: yesShipin gongye ke-ji
To investigate the effect of salt concentration on the quality and myofibrillar protein of crisp grass carp fillets before and after a single freeze-thaw cycle, fillets were marinated in 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mol/L NaCl solutions at 4 ℃ for ...

Cryptographic salting for security enhancement of double random phase encryption schemes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Security in optical encryption techniques is a subject of great importance, especially in light of recent reports of successful attacks. We propose a new procedure to reinforce the ciphertexts generated in double random phase encrypting experimental ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Effects of Quality Enhancement of Frozen Tuna Fillets Using Ultrasound-Assisted Salting: Physicochemical Properties, Histology, and Proteomics

open access: yesFoods
Salting pretreatment is an effective method to improve the quality of frozen fish. This study investigated the quality changes and proteomic profile differences of frozen yellowfin tuna fillets pretreated with ultrasound-assisted salting (UAS) and static

Salt Based Dry Fish Processing and Marketing by Fishers of Minneriya Reservoir in Sri Lanka

open access: yesTropical Agricultural Research, 2012
Fish represent a major source of animal protein in the Sri Lankan diet. However, it is more susceptible to spoilage than other animal food. The objectives of this study were to determine the scientific basis of the preparation and the selection of ...
