Hechtia mixtecana sp. nov. (Hechtioideae; Bromeliaceae), from Oaxaca, Mexico

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, Volume 2026, Issue 5, May 2026.
Botanical explorations carried out in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, led to the discovery of a new Bromeliaceae: Hechtia mixtecana, which is here described and illustrated. The new taxon is compared with the morphologically similar Hechtia fragilis, Hechtia lyman‐smithii, and Hechtia minuta.

Disentangling conservation asymmetries through socio‐economic transboundary factors across the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest of South America

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1328-1348, May 2026.
Abstract Ecoregions are often defined based on homogeneous biophysical and ecological conditions and are optimal spatial units for designing conservation strategies. However, transboundary ecoregions such as the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest (APAF) experience asymmetrical conservation outcomes, understood here as cross‐border differences, resulting from ...

The evolving landscape of molecular visualization

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Molecular visualization plays a central role in structural biology, transforming data into representations that reveal how molecular form relates to function. Since the construction of the first protein models in the 1950s, visualization practices have evolved in tandem with experimental and computational advances, shaping both research and ...

Improving drug identification in overdose death surveillance by using clinical natural language processing models

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, Volume 71, Issue 3, Page 1329-1337, May 2026.
Abstract The rising rate of drug‐related deaths in the United States, largely driven by fentanyl, requires timely and accurate surveillance. However, critical overdose data are often buried in free‐text coroner reports, leading to delays and information loss when coded into ICD (International Classification of Disease)‐10 classifications.

Agrarian counterpoint

open access: yesAmerican Ethnologist, Volume 53, Issue 2, Page 171-182, May 2026.
Abstract In Colombia's northeastern borderlands, agrarian economies shape how disease risk and stigma are understood and managed. As shown in ethnographic fieldwork in and around the Catatumbo region, cutaneous leishmaniasis—a sandfly‐transmitted disease that produces chronic skin lesions—appears in two radically different guises across adjacent ...

Contextualizing Socioeconomic Status Effects on Adolescent Brain Structure and Cognitive Skills: Evidence From the ABCD Study

open access: yesDevelopmental Science, Volume 29, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Youths’ socioeconomic status (SES) correlates with academic, cognitive, and neural outcomes, partly driven by influences on the developmental environment not captured by caregiver income and education alone. Leveraging Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study data (M = 11.92 years; total n = 8,764), this study took an exploratory ...
