Placebo Effect Sizes in Clinical Trials of Knee Osteoarthritis Using Intra‐Articular Injections of Biologic Agents

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Patients with knee osteoarthritis rely on symptomatic treatments, in which up to 75% of the pain reduction can be attributed to the placebo effect. This effect may vary based on treatment type (eg, biologics vs nonbiologic injection) and route of administration (eg, intra‐articular vs topical vs oral).

On Statistical Properties of Sharpness-Aware Minimization: Provable Guarantees [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) is a recent optimization framework aiming to improve the deep neural network generalization, through obtaining flatter (i.e. less sharp) solutions. As SAM has been numerically successful, recent papers have studied the theoretical aspects of the framework and have shown SAM solutions are indeed flat.

Polyp-SAM: transfer SAM for polyp segmentation

open access: yesMedical Imaging 2024: Computer-Aided Diagnosis
Colon polyps are considered important precursors for colorectal cancer. Automatic segmentation of colon polyps can significantly reduce the misdiagnosis of colon cancer and improve physician annotation efficiency. While many methods have been proposed for polyp segmentation, training large-scale segmentation networks with limited colonoscopy data ...

The Sam domain of the lipid phosphatase Ship2 adopts a common model to interact with Arap3-Sam and EphA2-Sam [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Structural Biology, 2009
Abstract Background Sterile alpha motif (Sam) domains are small protein modules that can be involved in homotypic or heterotypic associations and exhibit different functions. Previous studies have demonstrated that the Sam domain of the lipid phosphatase Ship2 can hetero-dimerize with the Sam domain of the PI3K ...

Perturbation of Methionine/S-adenosylmethionine Metabolism as a Novel Vulnerability in MLL Rearranged Leukemia

open access: yesCells, 2019
Leukemias bearing mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) rearrangement (MLL-R) resulting in expression of oncogenic MLL fusion proteins (MLL-FPs) represent an especially aggressive disease subtype with the worst overall prognoses and chemotherapeutic response. MLL-

An Adaptive Policy to Employ Sharpness-Aware Minimization [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Sharpness-aware minimization (SAM), which searches for flat minima by min-max optimization, has been shown to be useful in improving model generalization. However, since each SAM update requires computing two gradients, its computational cost and training time are both doubled compared to standard empirical risk minimization (ERM).
