Tunable Enhancement of T Cell Expansion Through Modulation of Stiffness and Adhesion Receptor Engagement in an Engineered Hydrogel Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a hydrogel scaffold with controlled substrate stiffness and ligand functionalization for cell culture. Stiff substrates presenting CD3/CD28/CD2 ligands induce 2000‐fold expansion of T cells; this is 68% greater than the clinical standard (Dynabeads) and the first hydrogel capable of large‐scale expansion. Although expanding at a lower yield,

HIV Infection as a Risk Factor for Shigellosis

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 1999
We investigated cases of shigellosis in San Francisco and Alameda Counties identified during 1996 by active laboratory surveillance to assess the role of HIV infection as a risk factor for shigellosis.

Biomass estimates of Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, in California from the 1990-91 spawning-ground surveys [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The spawning biomass of Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, estimated from spawning-ground surveys in San Francisco Bay declined to 45,850 tons this season, following a peak of 71,000 tons in the 1989-90 season. This is the first major decline since the

Spin and Charge Control of Topological End States in Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons on a 2D Ferromagnet

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Chiral graphene nanoribbons on a ferromagnetic gadolinium‐gold surface alloy display tunable spin and charge states at their termini. Atomic work function variations and exchange fields enabe transitions between singlet, doublet, and triplet configurations.

Microscopic Insights into Magnetic Warping and Time‐Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Topological Surface States of Rare‐Earth‐Doped Bi2Te3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic doping of the topological insulator Bi2Te3 with erbium adatoms induces out‐of‐plane magnetism and breaks time‐reversal symmetry, opening a Dirac gap and driving a Fermi surface transition from hexagonal to star‐of‐David geometry. Microscopy, spectroscopy, and magnetic dichroism reveal atomically controlled magnetic interactions that tailor the

Modeling and analysis of the San Francisco City Clinic Cohort (SFCCC) HIV-epidemic including treatment

open access: yesMathematical Biosciences and Engineering, 2013
We investigate two HIV/AIDS epidemic models. The first model represents the early San Franciscomen having sex with men (MSM) epidemic. We use data from the San Francisco City Clinic Cohort Study (SFCCC), documentingthe onset of HIV in San Francisco (1978 ...
