Patterns and trends in sediment toxicity in the San Francisco Estuary

Environmental Research, 2007
Widespread sediment toxicity has been documented throughout the San Francisco Estuary since the mid-1980s. Studies conducted in the early 1990s as part of the Bay Protection and Toxic Cleanup Program (BPTCP), and more recently as part of the Regional Monitoring Program (RMP) have continued to find sediment toxicity in the Estuary.

Environmental activism in the San Francisco Bay Estuary

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 1991
Abstract This paper presents a brief description of the San Francisco Bay Estuary and its modifications. Problems associated with habitat loss and degradation, pollutants, freshwater diversion, and dredging are described. The activities of environmental groups addressing these problems, including several examples, are noted.

Benthic macrofaunal assemblages of the San Francisco Estuary and Delta, USA

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2012
The spatial and temporal distribution of macrobenthic assemblages in the San Francisco Estuary and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta were identified using hierarchical cluster analysis of 501 samples collected between 1994 and 2008. Five benthic assemblages were identified that were distributed primarily along the salinity gradient: (1) a polyhaline ...

Surveillance for previously unmonitored organic contaminants in the San Francisco Estuary

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2003
The San Francisco Estuary Regional Monitoring Program initiated surveillance monitoring to identify previously unmonitored synthetic organic contaminants in the San Francisco Estuary. Organic extracts of water samples were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in full scan mode. The major contaminant classes identified in the samples were

Managing freshwater inflow to the San Francisco Bay Estuary

Regulated Rivers: Research & Management, 1989
The watershed of California's Central Valley drains into San Francisco Bay, the largest estuary on the Pacific Coast. The water resources of the Valley have been intensively exploited, particularly in the last 50 years, with the construction of large-scale irrigation systems.

Dissolved trace element cycles in the San Francisco Bay estuary

Marine Chemistry, 1991
Abstract Dissolved trace element (copper, nickel, cadmium, zinc, cobalt, and iron) concentrations were measured in surface water samples collected from 27 stations in the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento—San Joaquin Delta during April, August and December of 1989. The trace element distributions were relatively similar for all three sampling periods,

Spring climate and salinity in the San Francisco Bay Estuary

Water Resources Research, 1993
Salinity in the San Francisco Bay Estuary almost always experiences its yearly maximum during late summer, but climate variability produces marked interannual variations. The atmospheric circulation pattern impacts the estuary primarily through variations of runoff from rainfall and snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada and, secondarily, through variations ...

Foraminifera of Sangamon(?) Estuary, Central San Francisco Bay: ABSTRACT

AAPG Bulletin, 1980
Up to 30 m of muds deposited in a Sangamon(?) estuary are found in boreholes drilled for the proposed Southern Crossing of central San Francisco Bay. Microfossils and plant fragments in the core samples represent deposits of shallow estuarine and deeper marine environments.

Interannual variability in dissolved inorganic nutrients in northern San Francisco Bay estuary

Hydrobiologia, 1985
Nearly two decades of seasonal dissolved inorganic nutrient-salinity distributions in northern San Francisco Bay estuary (1960–1980) illustrate interannual variations in effects of river flow (a nutrient source) and phytoplankton productivity (a nutrient sink).
