Strength, stiffness, and microstructure characteristics of biocemented calcareous sand

Canadian geotechnical journal (Print), 2019
Calcareous sands are known as problematic soils in nature and challenge geotechnical engineers in many practical projects. Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is an innovative soil improvement technique that uses biomineralisation processes ...

Sand Grain Micromorphology and Soil Age

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1981
Abstract The micromorphology of quartz grains (0.5 to 1.0 mm) from three soils developed in granitic alluvium were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The soils are located on riverine terraces in southern California. The soils have been dated as 22,000, 44,000, and 63,000 years before present (YBP).

Soil organic carbon in sandy soils: A review

Advances in Agronomy, 2019
Sandy soils cover approximately 900 million ha worldwide particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. There are extensive areas of sandy soils under cultivation, but the soil fertility is often low and dependent on the levels of soil organic carbon (SOC).

Compaction of Sand-Processed Clay Soil Mixtures

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1997
Abstract The effects of type of processed clay soil, curing period, and mixing procedure on laboratory compaction of sand-attapulgite clay (S-AC), sand-granular bentonite (S-GB), sand-powdery bentonite (S-PB), and sand-attapulgite clay-granular bentonite (S-AC-GB) mixtures are evaluated.

Effect of relative density and biocementation on cyclic response of calcareous sand

, 2019
Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) represents a promising approach to improve the geotechnical engineering properties of soils through the precipitation of calcium carbonate (...

Soil Moisture Characteristics of Sand‐Peat Mixes

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1967
Abstract Mixtures of Osoflaco sand and screened Canadian peat were examined for bulk density, tension‐moisture relations, wilting tensions and readily available water. As peat content increased, mixtures became lighter (less dense), held more available water, had a lower zone of saturation and approached wilting tensions more ...

Effects of Sand Sizes on Engineering Properties of Tropical Sand Matrix Soils

2018
This paper presents an experimental study focusing on the effects of various sizes of sand on the engineering properties of tropical sand matrix soils, particularly the undrained shear strength. Static triaxial tests on reconstituted samples of sand with 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% of low plasticity fines content by weight were carried out using GDS ELDYN ...
