Some years ago, I returned to England from Japan and found that I could not hear properly with my right ear. In a few days I had become completely deaf and could only converse with people in profile. I thought that this was a case of simple blockage due to my oriental genes for waxy ears, and I went across to the hospital to have my ear unblocked.
