The Influence of Chemical and Mineral Compositions on the Parameterization of Immersion Freezing by Volcanic Ash Particles

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 126, Issue 17, 16 September 2021., 2021
Abstract Volcanic ash (VA) from explosive eruptions contributes to aerosol loadings in the atmosphere. Aside from the negative impact of VA on air quality and aviation, these particles can alter the optical and microphysical properties of clouds by triggering ice formation, thereby influencing precipitation and climate.

An assessment of hydrothermal alteration in the Santiaguito lava dome complex, Guatemala: implications for dome collapse hazards [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of Volcanology, 2013
A combination of field mapping, geochemistry, and remote sensing methods has been employed to deter- mine the extent of hydrothermal alteration and assess the potential for failure at the Santiaguito lava dome complex, Guatemala. The 90-year-old complex of four lava domes has only experienced relatively small and infrequent dome collapses in the past ...

Explosion dynamics of pyroclastic eruptions at Santiaguito Volcano [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2004
In Jan. 2003 we monitored explosions at Santiaguito Volcano (Guatemala) with thermal, infrasonic, and seismic sensors. Thermal data from 2 infrared thermometers allowed computation of plume rise speeds, which ranged from 8 to 20 m/s. Rise rates correlated with cumulative thermal radiance, indicating that faster rising plumes correspond to explosions ...

Lahar detection at Santiaguito using Machine Learning techniques

open access: yes, 2023
The Santiaguito Volcanic Complex is located in Guatemala’s Western Volcanic Highlands, along the westernmost section of the Central American Volcanic Arc. Santiaguito presents multiple hazards (including pyroclastic density flows, lava flows, lahars, explosions and debris avalanches) to the local population, which numbers 1.6 million people within the ...

Temporal trends in lava dome extrusion at Santiaguito 1922–2000 [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of Volcanology, 2002
We present a means of extracting lava dome extrusion rates from data provided by the Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus instruments flown on the Landsat satellites. Extrusion rates derived from the Landsat data for Santiaguito dome complex (Guatemala) during November 1987 and January 2000 of 0.72±0.08 and 0.48±0.09 m3 s–1 compare ...

Surface temperature and spectral measurements at Santiaguito lava dome, Guatemala [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2004
An infrared thermometer, spectroradiometer and digital video camera were used to observe and document short‐term evolution of surface brightness temperature and morphology at Santiaguito lava dome, Guatemala. The thermometer dataset shows 40–70 minute‐long cooling cycles, each defined by a cooling curve that is both initiated and terminated by rapid ...

Integrated constraints on explosive eruption intensification at Santiaguito dome complex, Guatemala [PDF]

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Science Letters, 2020
Protracted volcanic eruptions may exhibit unanticipated intensifications in explosive behaviour and attendant hazards. Santiaguito dome complex, Guatemala, has been characterised by century-long effusion interspersed with frequent, small-to-moderate (<2 km high plumes) gas-and-ash explosions.

Kinetic Study of Oxide Growth at High Temperature in Low Carbon Steel

open access: yesMetals, 2022
High-temperature surface oxidation kinetics were determined for low-carbon steel using a Joule heating device on hollow cylindrical specimens. The growth of the oxide layer was measured in situ between 800 and 1050 ∘C under isothermal oxidation ...

Processing and Characterization of Bilayer Materials by Solid State Sintering for Orthopedic Applications

open access: yesMetals, 2021
A new processing route is proposed to produce graded porous materials by placing particles of Ti6Al4V with different sizes in different configurations to obtain bilayer samples that can be used as bone implants.

Mathematical Calculation of Stray Losses in Transformer Tanks with a Stainless Steel Insert

open access: yesMathematics, 2021
At present it is claimed that all electrical energy systems operate with high values of efficiency and reliability. In electric power systems (EPS), electrical power and distribution transformers are responsible for transferring the electrical energy ...
