Decaying lava extrusion rate at El Reventador Volcano, Ecuador measured using high-resolution satellite radar [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Lava extrusion at erupting volcanoes causes rapid changes in topography and morphology on the order of tens or even hundreds of metres. Satellite radar provides a method for measuring changes in topographic height over a given time period to an accuracy ...

A detailed view into the eruption clouds of Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, using Doppler radar [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2012
Using Doppler radar technology we are able to show that eruptions at Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, are comprised of multiple explosive degassing pulses occurring at a frequency of 0.2 to 0.3 Hz. The Doppler radar system was installed about 2.7 km away from the active dome on the top of Santa Maria volcano.

Recursos actuales y necesidades futuras: el caso de Santiaguito

open access: yesCuadernos de difusión, 2007
Santiaguito is a district in Peru’s northern Andes. In this paper we identify a number of opportunities to channel efforts towards its development. However, and as it is often the case, only the most explicit and obvious variables guide the development planning and management cycle. A non factual prospective analysis exercise allows to imagine a future

Investigation of the effect of inert inclusions on densification during solid-state sintering of metal matrix composites

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2017
Solid-state sintering is the most used process to produce composites. In this paper, the effect of inert inclusions on densification during sintering was evaluated for Cu-WC and Cu-W composites, which have several industrial applications.

Early Analysis of Landsat-8 Thermal Infrared Sensor Imagery of Volcanic Activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Landsat-8 satellite of the Landsat Data Continuity Mission was launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in April 2013. Just weeks after it entered active service, its sensors observed activity at Paluweh Volcano, Indonesia.

Nonlinear phenomena in fluids with temperature-dependent viscosity: an hysteresis model for magma flow in conduits

open access: yes, 2002
Magma viscosity is strongly temperature-dependent. When hot magma flows in a conduit, heat is lost through the walls and the temperature decreases along the flow causing a viscosity increase. For particular values of the controlling parameters the steady-

A Low-Cost Smartphone Sensor-Based UV Camera for Volcanic SO2 Emission Measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Recently, we reported on the development of low-cost ultraviolet (UV) cameras, based on the modification of sensors designed for the smartphone market.

Measuring large topographic change with InSAR: Lava thicknesses, extrusion rate and subsidence rate at Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala [PDF]

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Science Letters, 2012
Lava flows can produce changes in topography on the order of 10s-100s of metres. A knowledge of the resulting volume\ud change provides evidence about the dynamics of an eruption. We present a method to measure topographic changes from the\ud differential InSAR phase delays caused by the height differences between the current topography and a Digital ...

Turbulent ‘stopping plumes’ and plume pinch-off in uniform surroundings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Observations of turbulent convection in the environment are of variously sus- tained plume-like flows or intermittent thermal-like flows. At different times of the day the prevailing conditions may change and consequently the observed flow regimes may ...
