GERMANIUM ON SAPPHIRE

International Journal of High Speed Electronics and Systems, 2008
This paper explores the potential of germanium on sapphire (GeOS) wafers as a universal substrate for System on a Chip (SOC), mm wave integrated circuits (MMICs) and optical imagers. Ge has a lattice constant close to that of GaAs enabling epitaxial growth.

Strength and Transmittance of Sapphire and Strengthened Sapphire

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1981
Ambient and elevated temperature biaxial flexural strength were measured for polished sapphire windows. Tested for comparison were windows given an SiO or glaze surface treatment. Infrared transmittance and visible imaging quality were unaffected by surface treatment while significant increases in strength and thermal‐shock resistance resulted.

On the Wear of Sapphire

Journal of Applied Physics, 1961
The wear resistance of single crystals of sapphire was determined as a function of crystallographic orientation with respect to plane of wear and rubbing direction. Distinct anisotropy was found. Evidence of plastic flow at the wear surface on both basal and prismatic slip systems was obtained.
