The complete mitochondrial genome of Sarcophaga caudagalli (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2019
Sarcophaga caudagalli belonging to the Sarcophagidae is significant for medical and veterinary management. The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of S. caudagalli was first sequenced and annotated.

Expanding the Ecological Application of Invertebrate‐Derived DNA (iDNA) for Monitoring Terrestrial Mammals Using a Single‐Species Approach

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 4, July‐August 2026.
A novel single‐species, invertebrate‐derived eDNA (iDNA) method is presented for identifying European Brown Bear presence. Fly‐borne bear DNA remains readily identifiable for 24 h within flies and can be detected when just one fly in 20 has fed on bear scat. The method is effective both in laboratory and field settings. ABSTRACT Successful conservation

Catalog of the Calliphoridae, Rhiniidae, and Sarcophagidae of Egypt (Diptera: Oestroidea)

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Biological Pest Control, 2019
Oestroidea is a diverse superfamily of flies with a variety of feeding habits, mostly saprophages (e.g., majority of species of the genus Sarcophaga, Sarcophagidae), internal parasites of mammals (e.g., Oestridae), parasitoids (e.g., the genus ...

Insecticides alter wild and managed pollination dynamics on oil crop yield

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 7, July 2026.
Our results show that combining honey bee hives with insecticide use does not automatically enhance crop yield. Pollination outcomes are strongly scale‐ and context‐dependent, with wild pollinators providing disproportionately important services. Agricultural management should therefore prioritize integrated strategies that reduce pesticide pressure ...

Is the composition of the dipteran (Insecta) assemblage altered in mangrove environments by the presence of anthropogenic disturbances? A preliminary study on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Entomología
Sarcosaprophagous dipterans are well known due to their forensic and medical-sanitary importance, as they are possible vectors of pathogens and cause myiasis.

Recovery of male DNA acquired from carrion‐feeding insects in a simulated sexual assault scenario

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, Volume 71, Issue 4, Page 1576-1591, July 2026.
Abstract When bodies of sexual assault victims are discovered in advanced stages of decomposition, the recovery of direct DNA evidence is often compromised, posing a challenge in criminal investigations. This study aimed to determine insect colonization and succession patterns on pig carcasses inoculated with semen and to assess the feasibility of ...

Insects and Survival: A Review of Primary and Secondary Defense Strategies

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 7, Page 601-624, July 2026.
Based on a review of three decades of literature, insect defense mechanisms are classified into primary (I) and secondary (II) mechanisms of behavioral, morphological, and chemical nature. These mechanisms have been recorded in 22 (I) and 20 (II) orders, respectively.

Hairy, hairy quite contrary: Pollination and functional floral traits in a hirsute carrion‐scented stapeliad

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Floral mimicry of decaying substrates of animal origin, such as carrion or faeces, is associated with unusual traits such as geoflory, deep maroon or yellow colouration, floral hairs and unpleasant odour, but the functional significance of these traits for attracting and manipulating pollinators has seldom been examined.
