Expanding the Ecological Application of Invertebrate‐Derived DNA (iDNA) for Monitoring Terrestrial Mammals Using a Single‐Species Approach

A novel single‐species, invertebrate‐derived eDNA (iDNA) method is presented for identifying European Brown Bear presence. Fly‐borne bear DNA remains readily identifiable for 24 h within flies and can be detected when just one fly in 20 has fed on bear scat. The method is effective both in laboratory and field settings.
