This article presents an inscription from the antiquities market. This entry pertains to the eques Lucius Florus Florentinus’ sarcophagus, and it gives a new name to Roman prosopography. It also discusses Lucius Florus Euprepes, a freeman that can be identified in two other inscriptions from Ostia, and it provides new data about him.

A Sarcophagus at Providence

In 1920 the Rhode Island School of Design at Providence acquired an interesting marble sarcophagus (Fig. 1) which is said to have been found in Rome.1 It had been severely damaged, but the breakage was such that a reconstruction of the sarcophagus and its lid was possible without excessive restoration.

Klasik Dönem’in sonuna dek Lykia’nın başkenti olan Ksanthos’tan 1884 yılında British Museum’a götürülen Payava Lahti, iki mezar odalı, ahşap mimari öykünmeli ve kabartmalarla bezeli bir lahittir. Orta blok, güney dar yüzde; ayakta duran iki figür taçlandırma eylemi içindedir. Savaş giysili figürlerden solda duran ve taçlanan Payava’dır.
